Interesting facts you probably didn’t know about the tragedy…

  1. Prior to the titanic in 189 6, Morgan Robertson wrote a novel called Futility. This fiction novel told the story of how the largest ship ever built, named the “Titan”, hit an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean. Both circumstances and ships designs were eerily similiar. Did the author make an uncanny prediction of the future?
  2. If placed upright, the titanic would have been taller than any of the buildings of her time.
  3. There were thirteen couples on board celebrating their honeymoon. (?)
  4. The Titanic used 14,000 gallons of drinking water every 24 hours.
  5. RMS Titanic stands for Royal Mail Steamer and Royal Merchant Ship–because the ship carried mail.
  6. The fourth funnel of the Titanic was just for looks.
  7. Three million rivets held the massve hull together.
  8. The cost to build the Titanic is about $7 million nowadays.
  9. Six ice warnings were received by the Titanic on the day of the tragedy.
  10. Among the Titanic survivors there were two dogs.

Songe d’Automne (Dream of Autumn) by White Star Line Orchestra— Band members on board kept steadfastly playing until the very end, using light music to keep passengers calm while the available lifeboats were loaded. Titanic’s last song is undetermined, but witnesses state this was the finale.

Nearer My God To Thee by White Star Line Orchestra— Another acclaimed “last song.” (See above) Listen here: Nearer My God To Thee

My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion— A popular theme song from the movie Titanic, sung by Celine Dion. This song comes in many different languages and versions. Listen here: My Heart Will Go On

“Titanic still sails through our imaginations”

  • An Egyptian mummy (Princess Amen-Ra) was secretly hidden in the Titanic, destined for a musuem in the U.S. Her curse sent the Titanic to the bottom of the ocean. Go here for the full story: http://www.snopes.com/horrors/ghosts/mummy.asp                                                                                      -False. No mummy.
  • Anti-Catholic? The hull number on the Titanic was 390904, which, when seen in a mirror spelled “No Pope”.                                                                                                                                                                                    – False. The # was actually 131429.
  • Two stowaways hiding beneath the lifeboat seats were crushed to death by the intolerable weight of heavy women sitting on them.                                                                                                                                        –False. The stowaways didn’t exist.
  • Fire in Titanic’s massive coal bunkers! It could not be extinguished until two or three days afterwards by teams of firemen.                                                                                                                                          –True. Scholars believe intense heat weakened parts of Titanic’s hull and assisted in the break-up and sinking of vessel.
  • Bruce Ismay disguised himself as a women to sneak onto a lifeboat.                                                                  –False. However, First Class Passenger Jack Thayer claimed he saw Bruce pushing his way into Collapsible C. Then again, it’s “Every man for himself.”
  • The Titanic was assembled in such a frantic pace that a worker was trapped inside the ship’s hull. –False. Fatalities in construction were surprisingly rare. Only two verifiable worker deaths occurred. Unfortunately, the Titanic would later claim more human lives.
